Hancock County Assessor

Job Overview

  • The County Assessor is an elected full-time position

  • Offices are located in the Hancock County Annex and regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 8am until 4pm

  • Fixed term of four years

Job Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen 18 years of age or older at the time of assuming office

  • Must have resided in the county for at least one (1) year before election and remain a current resident and real property owner within Hancock County

  • Must complete Assessor Level II to III Certification and maintain continuing education requirements

    • If the candidate has never before been an elected Assessor, they MUST have their Level II Assessor/Appraiser Certification before taking office

    • Candidates MUST have their Level III Assessor Appraiser Certification if they choose to run for a second term

Responsibilities

  • Determines the assessed value of real and personal property, ensuring uniformity and equitable assessments for all property owners

  • Certifies the assessed values to the County Auditor

  • Calculates total assessed value of each taxing district and certifies gross assessments to the County Auditor’s office

  • Collects and maintains sales information on properties sold from 1997 to present

  • Processes appeal of assessment petitions, oversees review and verification of self-reported values

  • Supervises about 10 full-time and 2 part-time staff, using Xsoft assessment software

Desired Qualifications (not required)

  • Bachelors Degree in Public Administration or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of appraisal experience

  • 5+ years hiring, managing, supervising, and leading staff

Compensation

  • Elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits
