There are seven County Council positions.
Job Overview
Fixed term of four years, but is unlimited
Job Requirements
Must be a US Citizen 21 years of age or older at the time of assuming office
Must be and remain a current resident of Hancock County
Responsibilities
Ultimate decision-making power regarding fiscal affairs
Exclusive power to fix the county tax rate, make appropriations to be paid from county treasury
Adopts annual budget, incurs county indebtedness, and appropriates additional funds after the budget is adopted
Determines proper policy and sets priorities for allocation and expenditure of county funds
Reappropriates surplus funds, transfers balances in dormant funds to general fund
Establishes salaries, wages, per diems, and all other compensation for county officers, deputies, assistants, and employees that are payable from the county fund
Authorizes purchases or sales of county owned land
Levies taxes to provide funds for jails
Furnishes financial assistance to local community centers
Desired Qualifications (not required)
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
Experience running meetings, managing budgets, and setting policy
Strong public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills
Compensation
Shared only with serious candidates
Elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits
