Hancock County Treasurer

Job Overview

  • The County Treasurer is an elected full-time position

  • Offices are located in the Hancock County Annex and regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 8am until 4pm

  • Fixed term of four (4) years, for eight (8) out of twelve (12) years

Job Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen 18 years of age or older at the time of assuming office

  • Must be and remain a current resident of Hancock County

Responsibilities

  • Custodian of all monies belonging to the county, works closely with the county auditor

  • Serves as an officer on the county Board of Finance

  • Develops policies for billing and collection of various taxes: real-estate, bankruptcy, inheritance, innkeepers, gross income, and delinquent taxes

  • Issues various tax clearances and permits

  • Conducts annual real-estate tax sale or sheriff sale

  • Oversees and advises on financial planning, procurement, and investment of county funds and loans

  • Forecasts future financial decisions and positions and submits county budget to state

  • Maintains positive banking and insurance relationships

  • Maintains a cash book of itemized receipts balanced daily which must be available to the public

  • Supervises about 4-5 full-time and part-time staff

Desired Qualifications (not required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or similar experience

  • Certified Public Accountant

  • 10+years experience in accounts receivable/payable, financial book-keeping, and reporting for large organizations (with over $10M in revenues)

  • 5+ years hiring, managing, supervising, and leading staff

Compensation

  • $59,003 annual salary in 2020, $2,269.35 bi-weekly, plus benefits

  • Elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits
