Buck Creek Township Board Member Candidate

Hi! I’m Bill McDonald. I was raised in Bloomington Indiana and moved to Buck Creek township 16 years ago. For the last 14 years I have run a small business out of my home. I retired two years ago.

I was inspired to run by the many public servants I have met that run our state, republican and democrat alike. I have found them to be uniformly honest and hardworking folks, and I hope to join their ranks.

My wife and I are animal lovers, currently being trained by two pugs. You can find me on the tennis court from time to time, but I have been eyeing the pickleball courts of late. I’m a big fan of our rail trail system and spend a good bit of time on it.

Why I’m running:

Beyond a desire to serve, I believe in competition. Democracy is designed to create competition. It does no one any good when all you can find on your ballot are candidates from on party. Public servants do better when they have competition.

1. Fire & Emergency Services Funding and Staffing

Buck Creek Township is experiencing significant growth, and the fire department has reported rising call volumes and insufficient staffing relative to demand. The fire chief has requested long‑term funding support, including consideration of TIF funds and staffing increases to improve response times and safety. These needs are directly tied to rapid commercial and industrial expansion in the area.

Relevant Issues to Address:

  • Securing adequate long‑term funding for fire and emergency services

  • Supporting staffing expansions (firefighters, administrators, inspectors)

  • Improving response times and service capacity

  • Ensuring the fire department’s role in infrastructure planning (especially with large warehouse growth)

2. Managing Rapid Growth & Infrastructure Needs

Buck Creek Township is currently in a period of economic expansion, attracting new businesses and development. The township markets itself as a growing economic hub with expanding infrastructure needs.

Relevant Issues to Address:

  • Guiding sustainable, responsible development

  • Ensuring roads, utilities, and public services keep pace with growth

  • Coordinating development with emergency service capacity

  • Preserving quality of life and managing land use effectively

3. Budget Oversight & Township Financial Management

Township boards directly oversee budget adoption and fiscal management. With ongoing conversations about leveraging TIF funds and planning for increased service demands, financial oversight is more important than ever.

Relevant Issues to Address:

  • Transparent and responsible fiscal management

  • Strategic use of township funds, including TIF‑related decisions

  • Balancing growing needs with available revenue

  • Ensuring long‑term sustainability of local services

4. Township Assistance & Community Support Services

The Buck Creek Township Trustee emphasizes providing essential support to residents—food pantry access, financial aid programs, and crisis assistance. Maintaining and expanding these services can be a board priority.

Relevant Issues to Address:

  • Strengthening and supporting township assistance programs

  • Ensuring emergency aid is accessible and adequately funded

  • Improving communication about available community resources

5. Transparency, Communication & Public Engagement

Board meetings occur monthly and are open to the public, with agendas and minutes posted online. Voters often prioritize representatives who improve accessibility and communication. [buckcreekt...hip.in.gov]

Relevant Issues to Address:

  • Improving communication channels (online and in person)

  • Ensuring transparency in decision‑making

  • Encouraging resident feedback on township growth and services

6. Oversight of Township Property, Cemeteries, and Maintenance

Township boards share responsibility for maintenance of township property, pioneer cemeteries, and other community assets.
