Charles has been a part of the Hancock County Democrats for two years as a Precinct Chair and now as the Vice Chairperson. Born and raised in Indiana, after he graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1996, he enlisted in the United State Navy. After completing basic training and following on 'A' school for his job, he reported for duty on the USS Cape St. George CG-71 out of Norfolk, Virginia.
While onboard he specialized in all aspects of shipboard food service for his first year and half in the service. Then he earned his promotion to Petty Officer Third Class and began working as the Damage Control Petty Officer for his division where he worked on firefighting systems, water distribution, and limited HVAC systems. In 2000, he became only the fourth Mess Management Specialist to earn a very difficult qualification called Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
In April of 2001, after re-enlisting for two and half years he took orders to Williamsburg, Virginia to serve as an instructor in field cooking and logistics and cargo handling command and control. During this assignment he also served as a combat stevedore (cargo handler). He was deployed to Europe and the Middle East during multiple cargo handling and logistics detachments. After the attack of 9/11, he served in security and military police force protecting critical facilities in the homeland, and then deployed to the middle east multiple times, and once to Antarctica. He also helped to train and certify Naval Reserve Cargo Handling Units for deployments in support of the War on Terror.
After completing seven years he was honorably discharged in 2003. Shortly afterward he and his wife Robin welcomed their Daughter Emma into the world. Charles then began his first full time civilian job working as a martial arts instructor. Then in 2006, he found his calling in the water industry as his career for the future. He was hired as a laborer in a wastewater treatment plant in York County. While working at this plant then earned a promotion to Plant Operator Apprentice and started to learn to be a local subject matter expert on environmental issues by completing a four year Department of Labor apprenticeship program.
He earned his journey worker certificate as valedictorian of his apprenticeship class in 2010. During the same time he earned his Associates Degree in Business Administration. In 2015, Charles found an opportunity to return home to Indiana, and is now working in drinking water as the manager of a local water utility. During his time in Virginia, Charles also served as the Chairperson for his Neighborhood Crime Watch in Newport News, and later went on to be elected as the President of the Newport News Neighborhood Watch Coalition for a short time before coming back to Indiana.
For the last 10 years, Charles has worked to serve his community both professionally and personally. Professionally working to improve the public water system in Greenfield. Personally he has been active part of the Veteran Community. The Sergeant at Arms, Adjutant, First Vice Commander, and Commander of American Legion Post 119. He has also served as the Chair of the District Americanism and Government Committee, worked on local veteran issues with the state legislature and still has strong ties to the veteran community. He also has worked to bring more equitable and diverse people and ideas to build teams that can lead progressively into the future. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair and Precinct Chair C-3 and is proudly liberal, with the hope of building Hancock county, and the State of Indiana into a truly wonderful progressive place where everyone has the opportunity to live the best life for themselves.
Charles is happily married to his wife Robin for the last 22 years and they have a wonderful daughter Emma who both work in the medical field serving the public with their urgent medical care needs. This connection provides a real time perspective on medicare, medicaid, and the impact of social security issues on everyday Americans. His family has provided him with insight into how important it is for women to have the freedom of choice over their own bodies, healthcare decisions, and have their voting rights protected.
